Hhhh laurent binet5/23/2023 ![]() (He was Himmler's right-hand man, and the title refers to a piece of ponderous Nazi waggishness: Himmlers Hirn heisst Heydrich – Himmler's brain is called Heydrich). But Heydrich's icily demonic character necessarily dominates the book, and his pivotal roles in the key atrocities of the era, from Kristallnacht to the final solution itself, take up a substantial part of the narrative. It's about his assassination, specifically, and the undersung Czech resistance heroes who carried it out an angle that licenses a certain jauntiness in the tone. Whether you find it something more than that will depend on how you feel about the application of breezy charm and amusingly anguished authorial self-reflexiveness to a book about the Nazi security chief Reinhard Heydrich, who must be one of the most unfunny figures in recorded history. ![]() A breezily charming novel, with a thrilling story that also happens to be true, by a gifted young author amusingly anguished over the question of how to tell it … In principle there's nothing not to like about Laurent Binet's acclaimed debut, and HHhH is certainly a thoroughly captivating performance. ![]()

Marlon james dark star trilogy book 35/23/2023 ![]() ![]() One of TIME’s 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time Olivia Valenza, Boswell Book Company, Milwaukee, WI This is a book to be GEEKED about, and I absolutely am.” James’ talent shines and his passion in this book is clear. ![]() Rather, it’s a walk off the edge of the Earth. You’ll get the journey you want from this fantasy, but it won’t be the same trip around the block. The language, the beasts, the people-James’ writing is both brutal and beautiful. Lovingly crafted, it immediately steals you away from your world and steeps you in one of ancient yet familiar myth and magic. “ Black Leopard, Red Wolf is an amazing epic that launches from a familiar framework of the fantasy genre. Caleb Masters, Bookmarks, Winston-Salem, NC Summer 2020 Reading Group Indie Next List This is literary fantasy as you’ve never encountered it before and a truly original tale of love, loss, power, and identity.” Never has a magical world felt quite so otherworldly and yet frighteningly tactile at the same time. At turns hallucinatory, dreamlike, and nightmarish, Black Leopard, Red Wolf’s world envelops the reader in its stink, grime, sweat, and blood. James’tale set in a fantastical ancient Africa follows a hunter known only as Tracker as he trails the scent of a lost boy, meeting a shape-shifting leopard along the way. ![]() ![]() “Marlon James’ Black Leopard, Red Wolf is a shot across the bow of fantasy literature: bold, fresh, and filled with brutal wonder and endless imagination. ![]() The city we became characters5/22/2023 ![]() So here, Jemisin has written a love letter to New York about how its personality is embedded in its inhabitants, but where she sees it as a celebration my experience (albeit limited) makes me go ‘yeah, so what’. My visit to New York made me think that the whole place is dishing out it’s bad vibes and attitude as though it is part of a game to appear as obnoxious as possible. ![]() It is true, that towns and cities do have vibes and personalities but these are often accentuated in culture and the reality when you go and have a look yourself is rather different. The novel appealed to me because New York seems to me the only place in the world I have visited where I felt the whole city was performative, like the populace was taking part in a giant LARP about New York. I suppose I should get something out of the way first. ![]() These avatars, representing New York City must save the city from some kind of extra-dimensional Lovecraftian horror. The premise of the novel is quite unique – cities are personified as types of avatars in actual real people, people whose characteristics in some way embody the city. ‘The City We Became’ had a confused start, an intriguing and thought-provoking core, but ultimately drifted into quite a boring and unsatisfying conclusion. ![]() Murderbot5/22/2023 ![]()
The book of the book idries shah5/22/2023 ![]() In time, the pendulum began to swing in the other direction. Others either thought the cover price was too high for a "book that was not a book", or simply bought it for novelty value and kept it on hand to mystify their friends. ![]() One "expert" at the British Museum said it was "not a book at all". Reactions to "The Book of the Book" ran the gamut. But it projects this lesson in a highly unconventional way. "The Book of the Book", first published in that year and now in its seventh printing, transmits a 700-year-old narrative on the theme of "do not mistake the container for the content". In 1969, Idries Shah, author of over thirty books on Sufi teaching and learning, used modern methods of mass communication to create a teaching-event for the modern world. The purpose of these demonstrations was to create an event that people could think about and learn a lesson from. The classical Sufi masters often behaved in dramatic and unexpected ways in marketplaces, palaces, village streets, wherever people assembled. ![]() ![]() She is not shy as well as she didn't seem embarrassed about skinny dipping into a lake naked, even after Hallie stole her clothes. She is patient and a very polite, anxious person and tends to worry more than Hallie. ![]() She is bilingual or multilingual, as she spoke French when she was angered at Nick's decision to marry Meredith. ![]() Annie is also not as talkative and seems to be quieter than Hallie.
